The Indian Canyons are located in south Palm Springs, Ca. It is a beautiful natural area owned and operated by the local Agua Caliente band of Cahuilla Indians. It is home to a richly shared cultural history of the Cahuilla, and is an important area for native species as well as geologic natural history. It is made up of three main oases: Palm Canyon, Andreas and Murray Canyons. It is home to both the first (Palm Canyon) and second (Andreas Canyon) largest stands of native California Fan palms (Washingtonia filifera) in the world. All three oases have seasonal water running through trails and palms that are both spring fed and fed by snow run-off. Andreas canyon has water year round. The photos here include a particularly wet year, with large amounts of run-off.
A
unique feature of our native palms is that they are the only species to retain
their leaves throughout their life unless
they are removed. Naturally, this can occur via wind, flood, or fire. Look for
examples of these events in some of these pictures.![]()
